The same boat: Our need for more empathy - The Branding Iron

Between recent abortion pill bans and transgender issues in Wyoming, there has been heated debates circulating within communities of the state. I myself have noticed increased discussion on these matters within my own little world here at the University of Wyoming.  These are sensitive topics that people take passionate sides on, and in today's polarized political climate, it seems we are more likely than ever to become desensitized to opposing views, and thus, the people that hold them.  Looking at the world at large, I sometimes feel we as a society are falling apart. Gun debates continue to surge, inflation is a concern of most Americans, and climate change feels increasing...

The Many Lives of Jeannette Walls - The New York Times

Image
Listen to This Article ORANGE, Va. — Jeannette Walls could have had a life of leisure after the big success of her 2005 memoir, "The Glass Castle," but she has too much energy for that. She walks fast and talks fast. Her laugh can be as loud as a gunshot. She worked as a journalist in New York for nearly three decades and gave it up only when her book had spent months on best-seller lists. But even after more than 15 years in rural Virginia as a novelist who can send drafts to her editor more or less on her own schedule, she still seems like a reporter on deadline. On a chilly gray afternoon at the end of February, she was behind the wheel of an all-terrain vehicle, driving down a rough path on the 320-acre property she owns with her husband, the nonfiction author John Taylor. She said she was going to show me the prize chestnut trees in the woods and the place where her parents were buried. Up ahead, Mr. Taylor was piloting a smaller and zippier ATV. The engines rumbled as t...

Diary of a Bookworm: 'If We Were Villains;' a tragedy you'll never forget - StateHornet.com

M. L. Rio's novel is a modern-day masterpiece Disclaimer: Major spoilers for the book are included in this review. Dear diary, does life imitate art or does art imitate life? M. L. Rio asks something similar in the Q & A section of her novel " If We Were Villains ." But after reading the book, I came to the conclusion that life imitates art. This may not be true for everything, but it's true for the characters in this novel. In "If We Were Villains," seven fourth-year theater students attend the prestigious Dellecher Classical Conservatory where they've been playing the same roles since they started:  James Farrow plays the hero. Alexander Vass plays the villain. Richard Stirling plays the tyrant. Meredith Dardenne plays the temptress. Wren Stirling plays the ingénue. Oliver Marks plays the hero's companion. Filippa Kosta plays the extra. Each year on Halloween, the theater students of Dellecher put on a tra...

Randi Schofield tried her best to not dwell on all the ways her life changed, on the pieces of herself that got lost in the shuffle. She was a 34-year-old single mother who, not long ago, was in the throes of a big life transition. She had left her full-time job of eight years as a personal bailiff to a local judge. She was burned out, ready for something new. She pulled $30,000 from her retirement savings and was planning to give herself all of 2022 to expand the small catering business she had always dreamed about. This would be the year she bet on herself. It was risky, but she had a plan. She applied for part-time, remote office jobs so she could keep up with the bills, maybe save up for a summer vacation with her two daughters, Alicia, then 13, and Amira, who was 15. She felt guilty for having spent so much of her time working a...

Teyana Taylor talks lessons learned from latest project 'A Thousand ... - Access Atlanta

Image
She sings, dances and now, Teyana Taylor is showing off her acting chops in her newest movie, "A Thousand and One." Taylor plays Inez, a mother with a troubled past that is attempting to get her life in order. The unapologetic Inez ends up reconnecting with her son Terry and takes matters into her own hands to get him out of the foster system. While the loyal mother may find herself in trouble more than a few times, Taylor says Inez's perseverance is admirable. "A lot of what Inez was going through, a lot of people aren't built to make it through that and still be able to go on with a smile on her face … and just willing to continue the journey but understanding just because it's getting hard doesn't mean give up," Taylor told Access Atlanta. [embedded content] I would definitely have to agree with Taylor, as I got a chance to see an early screening of the movie. There were several powerful messages including overcoming hard times, the importance of ...
