Posted: 26 Jul 2019 09:18 AM PDT A teenage driver who couldn't afford expensive premiums paid for fake insurance as an old woman living in Newcastle - but was caught out after just four days Hassan Mir said he paid £50 to be made the named driver on the policy of a woman named Sarah White. The 19-year-old was in fact the only driver of the BMW and made up his connection to the fictitious lady to obtain cheap insurance. The plastering student at Kirklees college pleaded guilty to a charge of making a false statement to obtain insurance. Kirklees magistrates heard that the offence was uncovered by police shortly after 11pm on June 5. They pulled his BMW over on Leeds Road in Dewsbury and ran his details through the Police National Computer which brought up an issue with his insurance. Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: "Mr Mir confirmed that the policy had been set up by a friend because the quotes he'd obtained were too expensive. "He paid the friend to sort out insurance for a cheap price. "That (policy) listed an older female at an address in Newcastle as the policy holder and put him as a named driver. "That made the policy considerably cheaper but it was fradulent." Video Loading The fake policy was taken out with Aviva insurance, beginning June 1. Mir, of Lee Road in Ravensthorpe, confirmed to police that he'd lived in West Yorkshire all his life and had no relatives living in the Newcastle area. Mir was charged with obtaining insurance by creating a false policy holder and adding himself as the named driver, amending his date of birth to make himself older, and listing the policy under a false address. Magistrates heard that Mir, who only passed his driving test in December 2018, had no previous convictions. His solicitor Umar Yasin said: "He'd been searching to obtain a cheap policy and a friend of his guided him towards social media where he could pay a cheaper price. "He paid £50 to this person for a cheap premium and was aware that this policy he was added to was as a named driver. "He made full and frank admissions and explained the situation about the policy. "It's a question of what impact this had. There wasn't an accident and the impact seems to be just the financial benefit. "There are people who obtain insurance but omit certain details, such as accidents, to obtain a cheaper premium." Magistrates fined Mir £229 and ordered him to pay £85 costs plus £30 victim surcharge. |
