Wise, hardworking grandfather missed

Sunday would have been the 103rd birthday of my grandfather, Joe Hannah. He passed away at 95, and his family misses him every day.

He was an awesome grandfather, not because he bought us things but because he taught us things. The life lessons that came from my grandparents have been instilled into his children and grandchildren. He worked hard every day on the pig farm where he retired after 21 years of service, starting out in the Army Air Corps and then transferring to the Air Force in 1947 and finished up his working career at the Pentagon.

After he purchased the farm, he volunteered on many committees and boards to better the community that we live in today. The one thing I miss about him is seeing him coming in from the fields or barns, taking a shower, putting his "good" clothes on including cowboy boots and a hat, then heading off to take on the county. I don't know what he did at any of those meetings, but I do know he sure was handsome and smelled good going to them.

What are your pet peeves? We all have pet peeves. What are some of yours?

I would have to say my No. 1 is people who do not use a turn signal. They come standard with the car, so do us all a favor and use it.

Then, there are people who spit their gum out right where people walk. No one wants gum on their shoes, probably not even the person who spit the gum out in the first place. Another is people you cannot rely on, or who won't take the time to put away a cart properly in a cart return or park in a parking spot and not along the curb in front of a store. The best one, though, comes from grandpa: Ignore people who criticize just to be mean.
