Mayor Recognizes Doylestown Bookshop Owner On Anniversary - Patch

DOYLESTOWN BOROUGH — Doylestown Borough Mayor Noni West joined the borough council
on Monday night in honoring Glenda Childs on her 10th anniversary of owning the Doylestown Bookshop.

"On a sunny day in the fall of 2011, Glenda Childs made the decision to buy the Doylestown Bookshop," said the mayor. "Sunday, May 22, 2022 marked the 10th year of her ownership."

During those 10 years the Doylestown Bookshop has brought the community more than 500 author visits, eight monthly book clubs, a book signing with Eagles Quarterback Nick Foles, a visit with author John Grisham, events with (musician) Art Garfunkel, (author and cartoonist) Jeff Kinney, (celebrity chef and author) Lidia Bastianich, and (children's author) Judy Bloom and was part of the leadership that has brought the borough four book festivals.

The bookshop has endured and survived the COVID-19 epidemic and served as a refuge for residents - and one Iguana - during Hurricane Sandy, said Mayor West.

"Whereas the Doylestown Bookshop is a Main Street anchor store, now therefore I and the Doylestown Borough Council recognizes and thank Glenda and her staff for nurturing a bookshop that provides a foundation for our attitudes, beliefs and judgments, shapes our thinking and broadens our imagination," said the mayor.

Childs, who was joined at the meeting by members of her staff, graciously accepted the proclamation as she and her staff received applause from the audience, from council and from Mayor West.

"I especially liked that last part about what we bring to the community," said Childs. "It's very important to me and why I wanted to buy a book store, because book stores are such a part of the community. And Doylestown is a great community for a book store.

"That says a lot about the people who live in this area," she continued. "It defines us as well and as readers and people who care about new ideas and learning new things. With this crowd behind me we are committed to continuing to fill the literary needs in this town."

Since opening its doors in 1998 in downtown Doylestown the bookshop has offered its customers an alternative to the ordinary. The store stocks an extensive inventory of new and nearly new books from classic literature to current bestsellers.

The store opened a second location, the Lahaska Bookshop, in September 2017. The Lahaska Bookshop is located in Peddler's Village and is dedicated to providing the same customer service and wide selection of books that the Doylestown Bookshop provides.
