In a season of light, Syracuse Stage’s holiday show ‘Matilda the Musical’ braves a bit of darkness (Review) - syracuse.com

You don't have to be a child to recognize that the world isn't fair, adults often lie to get what they want, and authority figures can be both comic and terrifying, even as they delight in doing you harm. Writer Roald Dahl mined this vein of concern in his children's books "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "James and the Giant Peach"; in "Matilda," his protagonist is the requisite plucky girl who not only fights against unfairness but is determined to set things right. "Matilda the Musical" is the bold, brave musical Syracuse Stage is offering as this year's holiday show in collaboration with SU Drama, and they too are setting things right after 18 months of an unfair world. With book by British scriptwriter Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Australian musical comedian Tim Minchin, "Matilda the Musical" debuted in London's West End in November 2011. After transferring to Broadway in April 2013, it won five T

Today is a time when many Americans gather with friends and family to give thanks for their many blessings. The Thanksgiving holiday is a tradition that dates back to November 1621 when Plymouth colonists celebrated the bountiful harvest they had grown with the help of the Wampanoag Indians. The celebration grew and now is a major holiday and the official kickoff of the Christmas season. Here are some of the best holiday quotes, inspiration, blessings and prayers to mark Thanksgiving 2021: "Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind." - - Lionel Hampton "Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. The Hidden Cost of Neil Olshey for the Trail Blazers - Blazer's Edge

Image
For the last twenty days, Portland Trail Blazers President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey has been under investigation, allegedly employing bullying tactics and creating a toxic, hostile workplace at Blazers headquarters. The investigative process is presumably coming to a close this week. Very soon, Trail Blazers owner Jody Allen will decide whether to retain Olshey or dismiss him. Over the last three weeks, we've heard varying stories regarding the issue. Former employees have spoken out openly against Olshey. Some media members have given us a glimpse into complaints against him via anonymous sources. Others have jumped to defend Portland's lead executive.
