They actually went with stones (hope they were smooth!) and these things that people used before toilet paper existed.

What To Do When A Hunger Pang Strikes
EVER BEEN SO hungry it hurt? That gut-wrenching feeling is called a hunger pang (yes, pang, not pain). And, you've likely experienced this moment of discomfort at least once.
What exactly is a hunger pang? Think back to the time you did that juice cleanse to lose weight, and your stomach was crying out for real food. Or that time you were running late to work and forgot to eat a good breakfast and jolts of pain radiated through your stomach, distracting you until lunch.
But how are hunger pangs any different from plain old hunger?
"Hunger pang, a term often misinterpreted as 'hunger pain', is a term that describes the general discomfort caused by the feeling of hunger, involving contractions of the stomach when it is empty," says Andrew Akhaphong, M.S., R.D., L.D., a retail dietitian for Mackenthun's Fine Foods.
A hunger pang can range from being slightly uncomfortable to that sharp stabbing feeling we know all too well. We consulted dietitians to understand why hunger pangs happen, and how to get rid of them, below.
THE PANG HAPPENS for a reason: "Motilin is the hormone produced in the small intestine that triggers a hunger pang," says Krystal Dunham, R.D., L.D., owner of The Mother Road Dietitian. Motilin causes your stomach and small intestine to contract, which is what creates the feeling of a hunger pang.
Ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite, is often released with motilin. So, in addition to feeling the physical contractions, you also start to feel hungry.
What Does it Mean When You Have a Hunger Pang?SIMPLY PUT, A hunger pang is your body's way of telling you that it's time, or maybe past time, to eat. "A hunger pang is usually one of the last-ditch efforts your body uses to tell you it needs more food," says Dunham.
While various fad diets might tell you that hunger is something to be suppressed, this is absolutely not the case. "Definitely do not ignore a hunger pang," she says. "Recognizing hunger and a hunger pang means you are tuning into what your body needs in regards to nourishment."
That said, a hunger pang can sometimes be a sign that you're thirsty, Akhaphong says. But don't fall into the trap of trying to dull true hunger by drinking water. If you've been drinking plenty of water—eight glasses a day is a good place to start, although hydration really varies from person to person and with your activity level each day—then that pang is probably a sign you need to eat.
How to Deal with Hunger PangsALMOST ALWAYS, A hunger pang is a sign that it's time to eat. If you really think you might just be thirsty, drink a glass of water and see if the hunger pangs disappear within a few minutes. If they don't, you need some food.
If it's mealtime, great. But if not, a snack can help tide you over until it's time to sit down for something more substantial. "Choose a snack with a combination of fiber, protein, and fat such as cheese and mixed berries, a sandwich, or hummus and veggie sticks."
Related StoryAnd, whether you feel thirsty or not, it's a good idea to drink a glass of water (or another unsweetened beverage) as well.
Can You Avoid Hunger Pangs?PROPABLY NOT.
In a perfect world, we would all keep ourselves properly fueled at all times. But in the real world, you're bound to let yourself go a little too long without eating on occasion, resulting in that gnawing hunger.
That said, hunger pangs shouldn't be something you feel all the time. There are other more subtle signs of hunger that show up before your stomach starts crying out for food.
"Hunger presents itself differently for everyone," Dunham says. "However, some signs of hunger include tiredness, lack of concentration, and irritability." And, she adds, the drop in your blood sugar that happens when you haven't eaten for a few hours can cause a quick shift in your mood. "You may even notice yourself suddenly becoming angry, short-tempered, annoyed, or being a real jerk."
The Bottom Line:IF YOU HAVE hunger pangs, eat!
If you're constantly having hunger pangs, it's probably a sign that you're not eating enough overall. Make sure you're eating at least three meals a day, and add snacks as needed when you feel the signs of hunger come on. If you're already eating consistently and still can't alleviate hunger pangs, try adding more fiber to your meals.
"A dietary pattern high in fiber from whole grain sources like whole wheat bread, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, or brown rice can help sustain regular levels of insulin (which impacts blood sugar) and the hunger hormone, ghrelin," Akhaphong says.
But the occasional hunger pang is a totally natural response that happens when your body needs more energy from food. When a gnawing feeling overtakes your stomach, don't second guess it—just grab a snack and eat.

Getty ImagesBetween 2012-2015, The Hunger Games franchise could not be ignored in Hollywood. Backed by an all-star cast that was fronted by Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, with character performances coming from Oscar winners like Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Mahershala Ali, the five combined movies that have made up the series thus far have accrued over $3.3 billion at the box office, with both The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ranking amongst the 50 highest earning movies of all time in North America. The story of Katniss Everdeen gripped millions of moviegoers during its insane four-year run. And that reign continued eight years later when a prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, was released in 2023, stretching the narrative even further.
So what exactly is the story of The Hunger Games franchise? How do you watch the movies in order? How closely do they follow the source material? And what movies are planned for the future? This article has all the answers to your Hunger Games questions. Here, you'll learn about the history of the original novel series and how its story ultimately translated to the big screen. If you're interested in becoming part of the legendary franchise, this article contains everything you need to know.
Hunger Games Book SeriesHunger Games Books and Merchandise for the 2012 Movie Release.
Corbis via Getty Images"The Hunger Games" is a young adult book series written by Suzanne Collins. The original trilogy of books, which consisted of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay," was released in each successive year between 2008 and 2010, with the fourth book, a prequel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, released in 2020. So, in total, four books have been published, with a fifth book that will also serve as a prequel to the original trilogy, Sunrise on the Reaping, slated to be released in March 2025.
Collins, who prior to becoming an author had worked as a television writer for children's programming, claims she drew her inspiration for the novels by combining two distinctly different interests: classical mythology and reality television. The grand idea for the novels' story, in which a post-apocalyptic, oppressive government forces children to fight to the death on television, came to Collins while sifting between reality shows and coverage of the Iraq War. The protagonist of the original trilogy, a 16-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen, volunteers herself to become part of the games after her sister is elected to participate. The series follows Katniss' struggle to survive the games, and then, as the symbol of rebellion, ultimately overcome the tyrannical Capitol led by President Snow. The prequel books track Snow's rise to power and dominance.
The original Hunger Games trilogy consisted of four movies, with the final book being split into two parts—they include The Hunger Games (released in 2012), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015). There was also a film made for the prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, that released in 2023. Combined, those five movies accrued over $3.3 billion at the worldwide box office, making them some of the most profitable coming-of-age movies ever. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was the most lucrative of the bunch, earning just over $865 million, with $424 million coming from domestic earnings (making it, as of the time of this writing, the 33rd highest earning movie in North America ever).
Generally, the movies follow the main plot points of the books, with liberties taken for efficiency and cinematic spectacle. For instance, the novels are narrated from Katniss's perspective, while the films omit her internal monologues. There are also several characters, like Haymitch, Finnick and Johanna, that receive detailed backstories in the books, but receive less time and development on screen. We should also note the action scenes, which were often described from Katniss's limited perspective in the book, yet are amplified and stretched beyond her point of view for the movies. These sorts of changes are inevitable for any blockbuster adaptation. Ultimately, however, these dystopian movies aim to capture the grim and rebellious essence of the novels, and largely stay true to the stories and personalities of the most important characters.
Hunger Games Movies In Order Of ReleaseHere is the order in which The Hunger Games movies were released:
Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Banks on the set of the film "The Hunger Games: ... [+] Catching Fire" in 2012.
Getty ImagesBecause the prequel novel, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," released after the original trilogy, the movies were not released in chronological order. However, it's not necessary to watch the prequel before the original four films. You could certainly do that and gain some background material on President Snow ahead of time. But much like Anakin's journey to becoming Darth Vader was broken up by similar timeline shifts in the Star Wars franchise, you can appreciate Coriolanus Snow's story in this broken up order, and in fact might appreciate it more by knowing who he will ultimately become.
Now let's review each of the movies in The Hunger Games franchise—their plots, how the movies were received, who directed and starred in them and where you can watch them.
1. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)Set 64 years before the events of what takes place in The Hunger Games, Coriolanus Snow is determined to honor his father General Crassus Snow, who died during the First Rebellion, and restore honor to their family name, is assigned to mentor the female tribute from District 12, Lucy Gray Baird, in the 10th Hunger Games. Coriolanus, hoping to boost viewer engagement with the event through a sponsorship scheme, inspires a wide audience to rally around Lucy Gray. But many people view the Hunger Games as wrong and hope to subvert the government many years before the Katniss-led uprising. During a tour of the arena, a rebel bomb kills several mentors and tributes, but Lucy Gray saves Coriolanus, strengthening an already deepening bond between the two. As Lucy Gray competes, Coriolanus attempts to help her—which eventually backfires on him, causing him to be targeted by the Capitol, sending him down a road where his relationship with both the ruling power and Lucy Gray becomes increasingly strained and complicated.
Of all the Hunger Games movies, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was greeted with the most middling of reviews. While praised as faithful to the "Hunger Games" book series and a loyal depiction of the information and characters in the prequel novel, many felt the emotional weight of both the book series and the original movies didn't translate as cleanly. However, this marks the only time in the Hunger Games series that critics and the audience were strikingly misaligned. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie sports a score of 64% from critics, yet 89% from the audience. It's metascore sits at 54 on Metacritic.
The cast of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes includes Tom Blyth as Coriolanus Snow, Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, Peter Dinklage as Casca Highbottom, Hunter Schafer as Tigris Snow, Jason Schwartzman as Lucretius "Lucky" Flickerman and Viola Davis plays Dr. Volumnia Gaul.

2. The Hunger Games (2012)In the dystopian nation of Panem, the population has been split into 12 districts. Controlled by the Capitol, these districts are forced to participate in the annual Hunger Games each year, one boy and girl from each district to participate in a battle to the death—they are called "tributes." When 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen's younger sister, Prim, is elected to represent her district, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and Peeta Mellark, the male tribute from her district, are then whisked away to the Capitol, where they must train and ready themselves to compete in the televised event. Back in District 12, Katniss's best friend, Gale Hawthorne, struggles as he fears for her life and helps her family get by. Under the guidance of their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, and the flamboyant Effie Trinket, Katniss and Peeta enter the Hunger Games and fight for their survival. Tension exists between them throughout, as only one contestant can survive.
The Hunger Games received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the movie for its very faithful adaptation of Collins' novel. They also noted the film's strong performances, particularly Jennifer Lawrence (who would go on to win an Oscar the very next year for Silver Linings Playbook) as well as the movie's handling of very dark themes given its largely young cast. The Hunger Games owns an 84% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 81% score coming from the audience, and a metascore of 68 on Metacritic.
The Hunger Games stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss and Josh Hutcherson plays Peeta, while Liam Hemsworth plays Gale. Other cast members include Woody Harrelson as Haymitch, Elizabeth Banks as Effie, Donald Sutherland as President Snow, Stanley Tucci as Caesar, Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, Willow Shields as Prim, Paula Malcomson as Katniss's mother, Amandla Stenberg as Rue, Alexander Ludwig as Cato, Isabelle Fuhrman as Clove, Jack Quaid as Marvel, Leven Rambin as Glimmer, Toby Jones as Claudius and Wes Bentley as Seneca.

3. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)After threatening to kill themselves by eating poisonous berries, the Capitol makes an unprecedented move and considers both Katniss and Peeta winners of the annual Hunger Games in the previous film. Thus, upon their arrival back home, they become symbols of hope and survival to District 12, leaving President Snow wary of a possible rebellion. To squash any chance of an uprising, he announces that the 75th version of the Hunger Games will feature previous victors from past events. Thus, Katniss and Peeta find themselves back in the arena. The two form alliances with other tributes like Finnick Odair and Johanna Mason, but regardless they find the competition much more fierce than last time. Back in District 12, Gale grapples with his feelings for Katniss and his increasing anger towards the Capitol. Gale becomes more involved in the rebellious activities, helping to protect and inspire the community, while Katniss becomes increasingly aware of the Capitol's political machinations and plots her own rebellion with other tributes.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has been the most well-received movie to date. Critics appreciated how much deeper the story went into the dystopian world, and the manner in which the politics of Katniss' situation were further expanded. Once again, Lawrence was lauded, and the character performances, including new ones from Jena Malone and Sam Claflin, were given high praise. The movie scored 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 89% from the audience, and achieved a metascore of 76 on Metacritic.
All of the same actors return to reprise their roles from The Hunger Games. New cast members include Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch, Sam Claflin as Finnick, Jena Malone as Johanna, Jeffrey Wright as Beetee, Lynn Cohen as Mags, Amanda Plummer as Wiress, Alan Ritchson as Gloss and Stephanie Leigh Schlund as Cashmere.

4. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014)After a coordinated effort by the rebels to destroy the arena, Katniss is rescued by District 13, previously thought to be annihilated, while Peeta is captured by the Capitol. Mockingjay – Part 1 then picks up with Katniss, who is struggling with the trauma of her experiences in the Hunger Games and losing Peeta, as the new face of the rebellion. Serving under the leadership of District 13's president Alma Coin and guided by Plutarch Heavensbee, the Head Gamemaker for the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss agrees to take on that symbolic role—she is dubbed by the rebellion as "Mockingjay"—and help them overthrow the Capitol in exchange for Alma's promise to rescue Peeta. Katniss and Gale get to work with the rebellion, spreading propaganda and participating in dangerous missions that are meant to undermine the Capitol's authority. It's a slow and steady build towards a rescue mission with Peeta—with a twist coming that Katniss does not expect.
Mockingjay – Part 1 is where the reviews become more mixed. Splitting the final "Hunger Games" book into two parts caused the story to slow way down, taking away some of the urgency that's essential to Katniss and Gale's rebellion plot. Less action and more talking made the film a bit of a bore for many critics, who nonetheless praised the performances within the film. Currently, the movie has a score of 69% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 71% from the audience, along with a metascore of 64 on Metacritic.
All of the same actors reprise their roles from the previous two movies. New cast members include Julianne Moore plays President Coin, Mahershala Ali as Boggs, Natalie Dormer as Cressida, Elden Henson as Pollux, Wes Chatham as Castor and Evan Ross as Messalla.
Here's where you can stream The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.
5. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015)Little does Katniss know that Peeta has been brainwashed by the Capitol to kill her, leading to an attack that leaves Katniss injured. As she recovers, Peeta is detained and the rebellion continues its efforts to overthrow the Capitol. Eventually, President Coin and her army, including Katniss and Gale, launch an attack, navigating traps and obstacles set by the Capitol as they make their way toward President Snow, aiming to assassinate him. All the while, Katniss grapples with her romantic feelings towards both Gale, whose extreme dedication to the rebellion is causing strain to their relationship, and Peeta, who is slowly recovering his memories and becoming his old self. As they fight and inch their way towards Snow, friends are lost and tough decisions are made.
The critical reception to Mockingjay – Part 2 was similar to Part 1. While many were happy with the inclusion of more action sequences and satisfied with series' ultimate conclusion, many felt the emotion that was present in the books was lost on screen. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned 69% from critics and 66% from the audience, and on Metacritic the movie achieved a score of 65.
All of the same actors reprise their roles from the previous three movies. Tthe only new prominent member of the cast is Gwendoline Christie as Commander Lyme.

New Hunger Games Book and FilmNo, the story of Collins' "The Hunger Games" isn't over yet, as at least one more prequel is on the way, called Sunrise on the Reaping. Let's discuss what we know about the book and its accompanying movie adaptation.
What We Know About The BookThe fifth volume of The Hunger Games series, Sunrise on the Reaping, was announced on June 6, 2024, and is set to be released on March 18, 2025. This prequel to the original Hunger Games trilogy will take place 40 years after the events of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and 24 years before Katniss's journey in the first novel.
The book will cover the events of the 50th Hunger Games, which was won by Haymitch Abernathy, who served as Katniss and Peeta's mentor in the trilogy. As is famously known about Haymitch from the books, he was punished after what President Snow considered to be cheating during the Hunger Games, for which his entire family was murdered as punishment.
"With Sunrise on the Reaping, I was inspired by David Hume's idea of implicit submission and, in his words, 'the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,'" Collins said in a statement. "The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question 'Real or not real?' seems more pressing to me every day."
What We Know About The MovieDespite The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes accruing a franchise-worst of $337 million at the worldwide box office, Lionsgate fully plans to make a film adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping. Not much is known about the planned prequel as of yet, as not much is known about the plot of the book outside of Haymitch's involvement. The only true detail we have is the tentative release date of Nov. 20, 2026.
Bottom Line
The Hunger Games franchise has, much like the novel series, blown up into a worldwide spectacle that hasn't relinquished its grip on Hollywood yet. This article reviews everything you need to know about both the books and movies before you embark on watching this dystopian story.
